Hate Budgeting? The Envelope System Might Be Worth a Try

I’ll be honest… I hate budgets.

I’ve never found them easy to stick to, especially when they involve writing down and tracking every single place you spend your money. An easier method I like is the Envelope System.

At the beginning of the month, take out cash and divide it into envelopes for different spending categories like groceries, gas, dining out, entertainment, or anything else where the amount you spend changes each month. As the month goes on, you only spend what’s in each envelope. Once an envelope is empty, that’s it—or you’ll need to borrow from another category if you want to keep spending.

Why Does It Work?

The biggest benefit is that it makes you much more aware of where your money is going. It’s so easy to tap your card these days without really thinking about it. But when you can physically see the cash disappearing from an envelope, you have a much better idea of how much you’ve spent and how much you have left.

If budgeting has been a struggle for you too, the Envelope System might be worth a try. Sometimes keeping it simple is what makes it easier to stick with.
